Dr. Eunice Avilés began her career as a Co-therapist in group therapy sessions for sexually abused children in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, she conducted initial interviews in cases referred due to allegations of sexual abuse. She participated in two main research projects conducted by the Support Program for Sexually Abused Victims and Their Families (PAF): Development of a socio-demographic profile of sexually abused Puerto Rican children and the Assessment of the psychometric properties of the Trauma Symptom Checklist (TSCC) and the Children Depression Inventory (CDI) in a sample of Puerto Rican children referred due to allegations of sexual abuse. Later on, Dr. Avilés continued her work offering psycho-educational services to students at vocational public schools in Carolina, Trujillo Alto, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. While working with both populations, she observed the great need for educating our youths and the general population on topics of human sexuality.
Dr. Avilés moved to Springfield, MA in 2005 to perform her internship in clinical psychology at School Street Counseling Institute. After finishing her doctorate degree and obtaining her license as a clinical psychologist in Puerto Rico, she remained working for this community clinic. There she provided individual, family, and couples psychotherapy as well as psycho-education on human sexuality and sex therapy to a low income multicultural population.
To fulfill her commitment to educating the population on preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections and to promote healthy sexual behaviors, Dr. Avilés got certified as a Sex Educator by Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. In addition, she is in the process of getting certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapist.
At this moment Dr. Aviles is actively supporting the Healthy Workplace Bill. This bill creates a legal claim for bullying targets who can establish that they were subjected to malicious, health-harming behavior. It also provides defenses for employers who act preventively and responsively with regard to bullying and includes provisions to discourage frivolous claims.
